Brian, I'm inquisitive(and very nosey!) - did you take the picture in the store or did you buy a box to take home and photo it there?

If the latter, are you now going to save them for next Easter? I always buy our Christmas crackers in the January sales, but having to store Easter crackers as well as Mother's Day, Whit Sunday, Father's Day, August Bank Holiday, Halloween and any other excuse they can think of, crackers would fortunately take up too much storage space to contemplate.

I photographed them in the store. David carries a camera in his bag at all times which is very useful when one spots strange car number plates, curious signs and oddities such as, well, Easter crackers...

What was surprising was that there were only two boxes left so, unlikely though it seems, they must have actually sold some - either in time for Easter or to people who are able to keep them for a year!

I really wish, now, that I'd looked to see what the contents were. I also can't help wondering whether you are supposed to pull them (in the usual crackery way) or wait for them to hatch...

It's when they bring out Guy Fawkes Night crackers that the trouble will begin. It's all fun and games until somebody loses a hand.

Talking of crackers reminds me of that wonderful Christmas episode of The Good Life in which Margot and Jerry 's Christmas (which should have been delivered in a Harrods van) doesn't arrive and they have to share the Good's home-made Christmas instead.

Tom's crackers are made out rolled up newspaper and, as they don't have anything inside to make them go bang, he tells everyone that they have to say BANG! when they pull them! But, since they are crackers, Margot, naturally, insists on saying CRACK!
